A complete restoration for this 1939 Gar Wood Runabout was finished in the fall of 2012. The majority of the work was done by the owner. The previous owner had purchased what he believed to be a Chris Craft Barrelback and intended to restore it when he retired. After doing some research he discovered its true identity was a 1939 Garwood Custom Runabout model 912 (Hull #6504) that was originally delivered to Syracuse, Indiana, boat 56 of the 122 built of this series. This boat won Best of Show Restored at the 2012 ACBS International Boat Show
1937 Chris Craft Custom Runabout - 'What Fun'

Purhased in 1973 for $1 (plus legal fees!), the What Fun has usually lived up to its name! Fully restored, 2000-2008. The WHAT FUN is a 1937 17’ Chris Craft custom runabout, acquired September 23, 1973 for $1 (and attorney’s fees of $10). At that time, I began the initial restoration but despite these efforts, the boat continued to sink. It was left in storage for more than 25 years, until the turn of this century -- when the fix-up really began. An uphill battle, but I’m gaining on it! The vessel’s name comes from another project of mine -- a 1969 BMW motorcycle with a side-car ride that I restored. While I was riding the bike on the Gold Coast of Chicago, a female onlooker commented, “What fun.” I couldn’t have agreed more, and thought her words might also apply to my boat. The name can be taken two ways: when it’s running, “What Fun!”; when not running, “What Fun?”
1937 Chris Craft Custom Deluxe - 'OLivia Rose'

This is the pre-barrel back design produced from 1935-1938. It has the same hull but different deck layout. It is estimated that a total of 328 units were built in this 4 year period.
Not sure about the early history of this 19’ Custom but do know she spent much of her time on Lake Geneva and was in remarkably good condition when purchased in the summer of 2012. She has the Model K 85hp engine and has been converted to 12 volts with dual batteries.
Fox River Valley Boat Company completed the exterior restoration over the winter as we elected to completely strip to bare wood and finish it with 12 coats of varnish. The interior, the chrome and all the mechanicals were in great shape and just required a good cleaning.
1930 Dart Silver Runabout - 'Miss Geneva'

"More Speed Per Horsepower" was the motto used by the Dart Boat Company of Toledo, Ohio. Miss Geneva is a 1930 26' Dart Silver Runabout. This was the only Dart shipped west of the Mississippi; Seattle Washington. With less then a 100 of these made, it is believed that only 9 exist as documented in 1995. With a 225hp Kermath Sea Wolf that propelled it to a top speed of 45 m.p.h. made it a popular choice for bootleggers. Miss Geneva then named Afton and owned by Tom & Julie Williams was shown in Lake Tahoe and received 20.875 points of a possible 22.

Our boat was shipped from Algonac, MI to the Chris-Craft dealer in Hessel, MI in June, 1940. The owner of the Hessel Grocery Store purchased the boat to deliver groceries to cot- tages in the area. Originally named “Callie Sue” after his granddaughter. After many years of service, a family that va- cationed in the area purchased and moved her to Indian Lake, Ohio. Rechristened as “Smoove” in the early 1960’s, Jackie Gleason’s character on “The Honeymooners” delighted in de- scribing how “Smoove” his cocktails went down. In the
1990’s the boat relocated to Des Moines, IA and was named “Traveler” and visited shows around the country. The boat was rechristened “Wooden Nickols” and is regu- larly enjoyed on Geneva Lake.

1900 Rushton Indian wood/canvas - 'Chingachgook'

Chingachgook is one of the first wood/canvas model canoes built by Henry Rushton of Canton, NY. This canoe was originally purchased by Robert Pruyn builder of the Adirondack Great Camp Santanoni in the Adirondacks of Upstate New York. Robert Pruyn's father was appointed Ambassador to Japan by Abraham Lincoln. The canoe was at the camp when then Governor Teddy Roosevelt visited and possibly paddle this canoe. The picture attached shows the grand and great-grandchildren of the author James Fennimore Cooper paddling the canoe at Santanoni in the 1920's. The Indian is the canoe in the foreground the canoe in the background is a 17' Indian Girl built in 1901 also also in my collection.

CHRYSALIS is a 1951 "Super Deluxe Semi-enclosed Cruiser". She has her original twin Chris Craft Model KL, 105HP each, engines. The hull has all original wood above the waterline. Previously modified to seat 16 passengers, she was used as a Coast Guard approved tour boat in Grand Lake Colorado. The extra seating has been removed and the interior put back to original.
1965 John Hacker Design Custom Runabout - 'Richard W. Scherff'

General Information: Boat #1, known as the "Flagship of the Fleet," was custom built by local boat builder Bill Budych with assistance from Dude Assman, specifically for the Water Safety Patrol. This classic wooden boat is the perfect blend of tradition and modern practicality. Often confused for a Hacker Craft, Boat #1 was custom designed by Budych who based the plans on a Hacker, but then modified them to meet the needs of the Patrol including the stresses and hard pounding that would be required for Patrol work. The modifications included a beefed-up, double-hull design with 3/4" planking (instead of 1/4" or 1/2"), extra rib supports throughout the hull, reinforced ribs and joists at stress points, and twin-engine configuration. The result was a very strong, durable boat with beautiful lines, but the ultimate in practicality.
Boat #1 turns 45 years old in 2010, and is regarded by many as one of the best-built boats of its kind anywhere. The current set of engines is the third set since the boat was first built. Wooden boat enthusiasts have come from all over to see Boat #1, and most of them will tell you, "It's a masterpiece." It is by far the most asked about boat in the fleet. Boat #1 is named in memory of Richard W. (Dick) Scherff, who was Operations Director for the Patrol for 22 years starting in the 1950's. Dick died while driving Boat #1, shortly after responding to a rescue call on Geneva Lake's north shore.

This rare Ventnor is restored to 100% original as built factory specifications. The decks are compound curved tongue and groove Honduras Mahogoney that is blind nailed and glued to the frames as it was done at the factory. This hull also has the rare Gray Marine Fireball 150 motor. This is one of six left in existance and only three of the other ones are in "restored" condition.

Shepherd Boats were built in Niagara-on-the-Lake….Ontario, Canada. This specific Shepherd was on display at the Chicago Boat Show in 1961 when my Aunt & Uncle bought it new. In 1993 the Shepherd’s bottom needed replacing at which time my Uncle debated selling it. However he passed away right before doing so.A few months later I decided it was well worth saving the boat, keeping alive so many fond memories of fishing & riding (getting soaked) in Uncle Muff’s Shepherd. The boat has gone thru a couple of restorations yet still has most of the original wood. The original Chrysler motor was rebuilt once and is still in use.This boat has been docked at Pier #1 since 1961 on Geneva Lake for the last fifty-one (51) years.

A one of a kind craft. William Budych Sr. built this boat for himself in my grandmothers garage. Sr was working for Mr. Russel Gage at the time. Dad and he had a great relationship, one hand washes the other. The boat was constructed for dad's personal use, however, it became the FLAGSHIP for sales of the 22' Gage Hackers. Bill Sr. headed up all of the production of the 23' Gage Hackers. They attempted to build a few after he had left & you can certainly tell the fit and finish of the couple built after his departure. This boat is a family treasure, never to be sold or traded.

This boat has been on Lake Geneva since newly purchased in 1959. The original owner named it “C deuce” (a capital “C” followed by a deuce of hearts). The third owner, who’s mother immigrated from Sweden, renamed the boat “Swedish Crossing”. The current owner, who is an opera lover, renamed the boat “Till Havs”, a Swedish art song sung by the great Swedish tenor, Jussi Bjorling, meaning “to the sea”. This boat is basically original except for the upholstery and has received tender loving care from Bill Budych and Bill Budych, Jr. for 53 years!

1967 was the last year Century manufactured a mahogany wood hull. The boat was order and delivered to Kramer’s in Fox Lake, IL for Rex Fitzpatrick of Elmhurst, IL. We purchased the boat from Rex in 1986. We did a moderate restoration in1986/1987 and a complete restoration in 2001/2003 including the hull, decks, chrome and interior. Powered by this original Chrysler 325 HP motor, Miss Millie will do approximately 40 MPH. The boat has won numerous awards including Best Century at the 2008 Geneva Lakes Boat Show. The Fox River Valley Boat Company has been our restoration and maintenance partner for the past 27 years.

The Lucky Penny is a 1952 23' Chris Craft Holiday with the original 158hp MBL engine, chrome hardware, and mostly original woodwork. The 23' Holiday was built between 1950 and 1953 and the Lucky Penny is 1 of only 88 ever built. A complete restoration was first started in 2004 by the Fox River Valley Boat Company and she is still maintained by Tom Wagner and his crew. Over the years the Lucky Penny has been kept as original as possible and she now spends all of her time on Geneva Lake hailing from the town of Williams Bay.

After looking for two years for our first classic boat last November I received a call from a friend who summers in Williams Bay, WI and spends his winter in Mt. Dora, FL. He told me about a Century Resorter he had seen and it might be the one for us. The 1956 Century Resorter had been brought down from Michigan to Mt. Dora where Tom Flood had completely stripped it down, replaced any bad wood, installed a new 5200 double bottom, new interior and finished it off with 11 coats of varnish. Entered into the 2013 boat show in Mt. Dora it received a lot of interest and we ended up the lucky owners. We have enjoyed our 1st summer with "Sonny" and enjoyed our 1st ACBS boat show this August in Madison where we were awarded "Best Century" of the show.
1957 Chris Craft Continental - 'Birchwood'

This boat was purchased new in February of 1957 by Karen's late parents, Robert and Maxine Birch, of Griggsville, IL. Her dad became a Chris Craft dealer in 1956 and Karen has his original franchise certificate. This boat is all original and Karen has the boat's original order form, invoice, service manuals, prop, fenders, hand spot light, ladder and water skies that her dad used. Her dad's captain hat sits so proudly on the boat's dash. Karen uses one of the original canvas boat covers that had never been used and was being stored in her dad's attic. This boat spent most of its time on the Illinois River in central Illiniois where Karen has great family memories. The last time the boat was in the water was in the summer of 1978 on the Mississippi river. Since then the boat had been sitting on her orginal cradle and boat trailer in a machine shed on the family farm. In May of 2010 the boat was transported by flatbed where it was completely restored. The boat was never named so Karen choose "Birchwood" in memory of her late parents. Karen's late parents are always with her on this boat and this boat is a constant reminder of how wonderful her parents were and the fabulous childhood they gave her.

The boat had 3 known previous owners, spending 20 years in a barn in Indiana, followed by Montrose Harbor in Chicago, and the Fox River. The boat includes original 158 H.P. MBL engine. In 2013, the boat's hull was stripped to bare wood and restored by Tyler, Jerry, Jack Slovick, and Dave Goodlow. Assembly Hull now calls Williams Bay, WI home.

Tom and Marg Wagner are the second owners of this 1956 Chris Craft Rocket. Fox River Valley Boat Co. restored this fine boat last year. The motor was also rebuilt. The motor is a CC 131 hp. The boat was delivered new to Fox River Valley Boat Co. back in 1956 and has never left this location. We enjoy using this boat out of this marina to this day. Our Son Nick came up with the name “Finn”. A cartoon character he enjoyed watching on T.V. I agreed to the name because the large chrome piece on the hatch looks like a fin on a fish. The Bible verse played into this name: Matthew 4:19 “Come follow me” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”

1959 Century Resorter - 'Fifty-Nine'

She is #135 of 180 produced in 1959. She is made with the classic "Carrier Deck" front end which gives the hull a beautiful contour of mahogany. And, one of the dryest rides on plain by rolling out the wake. She has the Graymarine V8 327 cu. in. engine which produces 225 HP and will run 45 mph at 4000rpm. But that is rare because she now is over 50 yrs. old. And as all wooden boat she just like to idle along and rumble... They came with a sliding leather convertible top, which I don't own because Matt Byrne won't sell me his with out the boat under it. She also came with a built in 3 rung ladder mounted on the back. She's real fine my "Fifty-Nine"
1980 Millerick Brothers Boat Works Edwardian fantail motor launch - 'PINK HOUR'

This boat was found in the woods of a Sonora, California estate. Originally steam powered, the 30' ten gauge steel hull built in 1980 by Millerick Brothers Boat Works was not operational but in excellent condition and showed great potential. She went through an eight year restoration of labor and love by Tom Batchelor of Reno, Nv. "Pink Hour" was stripped to bare metal, repainted, and refitted with a beautiful, meticulously restored 3 cylinder 20 hp Easthope gas engine. Original brass hardware and accessories were scrounged from collectors, swap meets, and salvage yards across the country, and what couldn't be found was carefully recast, machined, and fabricated in the correct period style. She can seat 8 passengers comfortably, and the top of the teak icebox doubles as a sitting area. The Easthope pushes her along at full hull speed ( 6 knots) at approximately 150 rpm, using less than one gallon of fuel per hour from her 30 gallon tank. She has both fore (cable) and aft (mechanical) steering as well as full reversing gear. Since her restoration, she has operated solely on the clear, pristine waters of Lake Tahoe. Recently she was purchased by Peter and Robin Mueller and moved to Lake Geneva, Wis. Engine specifications: 3 cylinder, 4-1/2" bore, 6" stroke, dual ignition (Bosch magneto and 12V coil), OHV, hidden 12V starting system that replaces the original hand start. A neatly installed alternator runs via a flat belt off the flywheel. Lubrication is by internal splash and external Manzel oiler which runs off the water pump connecting rod. Water circulation is by an exposed original bronze piston pump. The reversing gear and engine are mounted on a single integral cast bedplate and weighs approximately 1,200 lbs. Unique accessories: two wicker parasol holders and period-style parasols, original hand-operated "ah-oo-gah" horn from the Talking Horn Company, two Pyrene brass fire extinguishers, antique brass boat hook, porcelain knife switches for operation of lights, Saint Christopher medal, matching set of original Cello running lights and stern spotlight, original Phare-La Rai bow searchlight, and an illuminated binnacle. A spectacular example of an Edwardian fantail motor launch, she won both People's Choice and Most Elegant Boat at the prestigious lake Tahoe Concours d'Elegance in August 2008. Named for the alpenglow on Lake Tahoe's eastern Sierra Nevada mountains, "Pink Hour" is truly a magnificent piece of functional art which starts and runs beautifully and is easy to launch and operate. She is one of a kind and without equal.

My Luxury Sport Runnabout, "Real Escape" is roomy, sleek and extremely fast. It has a beautiful interior with all the latest technology, (EFI, power assisted steering, seamless gear shifting,) and is very responsive. The compliment I most often receive when people first view the boat is that they are surprised to learn that it is a contemporary classic, as it looks like a first class restoration. It is my second Grand Craft, (22 ft. starter) and it without a doubt will not be my last.

2007 Comitti Portofino 7.5 Runabout - 'CARITA'

A product of tradition and handcrafted on the western shores of Lake Como, Italy the Portofino is the largest of the mahogany line. The hull shape was developed by Elia Comitti from the Comitti family designs of the La Dolce Vita period of the 1950's. Built from a carefully selected solid African mahogany log seasoned for one year, the framing is of red oak and mahogany precision laser water jet cut for accuracy and then assembled on the WEST system. Epoxy and stainless fasteners are used to ensure the strength and durability required of these high performance boats. Seating for 5 adults and a 6 foot sun pad aft, the Portofino is best suited to lake, river and inshore coastal use.

The Antionette V is a John Hacker designed Gentleman's Racer built by George Kramer of McHenry, IL and completed in 1929. The original owner was Anton Cermack, who was the mayor of Chicago at the time. Mayor Cermack was assassinated in Miami, Florida in 1933 while shaking hands with President-Elect Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Originally built as an "open sportsman" the buyer requested that it be sent back to the factory and have a custom Teak hardtop installed on the boat, making it possibly the only full Teak hardtop Sportsman Lyman ever built. Nick has named the boat “Old Times”. Nick entered this boat last year when it was grey. He found a 1955 – 25 hp Johnson outboard. Nick is excited to show the finished product.

1957 Homebuilt - 'She Said Yes!'

Homebuilt from kit in 1957 by William Kernats, restored by 2nd owner Marc Daniloff. The Story: Sitting in the back of a Wisconsin pole barn rummage sale with a large NOT FOR SALE sign leaning against the bow, the future of this once-proud little boat seemed uncertain. With generous freeboard, and the slight barrel-back look to the stern, she had nice lines, but hadn't seen the water or a new coat of varnish in many years. She was hand built in 1957 from kit plans by the family patriarch William Kernats. Behind the boat was a large Evinrude Lark III 40hp outboard laying on its side, also "NOT FOR SALE". But Dad has passed away, and the family just didn’t have the time to restore the boat, but at the same time, they just couldn't bear the thought of selling "Dad's boat." According to the family, I was the only one who commented in the beautiful lines of the boat, even though it was “Not For Sale” and didn’t just try to lowball the outboard. They said to me "If you are willing to restore Dad's boat, we're willing to sell it to you." They had me at "If." Short story: I asked my wife about getting a little boat, and she said yes. She also asked if she could get a horse, and yes…I said yes. I am the humble second owner of this preserved 1957 Edwin Monk runabout, and co-restorer along with my teenage daughter Audra (“Can’t we just take it out now without varnish?”) Daniloff. All original wood, and still as snappy as the first day Bill Kernats put her in the water with his family. She continues to provide hours of enjoyment for my family. And like the first time I saw her in the barn, this little boat manages to turn a head now and then, both on the road and on the water.

In February 2001, I purchased a 1970 Streblow custom wood boat. This twenty three foot beauty had a great history that accompanied the boat Namely, a gentleman from northern Illinois, William D. Wallace, was a partner in a silver mine with John ‘Duke’ Wayne Wallace purchased the boat new from the Streblow factory in Kenosha, WI.,and they decided to name the boat “HI LO SILVER”, a very fitting name. They operated the pleasure craft on Lake Delavan in Wisconsin, for almost ten years. John Wayne passed away in 1979. With the drop in the price of silver in 1980, they decided to sell the boat. Larry Streblow and son Randy purchased the boat and retuned it to their factory in Kenosha. The Streblow family remodeled the boat and kept it for personal use for a couple of years until it was sold to Gregg Liebovich from Rockford, Illinois. He kept the boat for eighteen years on Geneva Lake. After cruising Geneva Lake over the summer, I load the boat and haul it on my annual journey back to Lake Eustis, Florida, where I, along with the help of my friends, refinished the boat and renamed it ‘Mister T III’. John Wayne would be impressed with the revitalization of “HI LO SILVER.”

Eric and Kathy's 1958 19' Streblow Rebel is one of the oldest surviving Streblow inboards. It was purchased as a derelict in 1994, and was refurbished by the Moberg family over the next 3 years. Most of the bottom and side planking is original. It is one of the only two 19' Streblows built in 1958, and has the original Cal Connell Cadillac Crusader 390 cu. in. engine. Only one other Streblow used this engine, which was the most powerful engine available in 1958. The Rebel is used regularly on the Fox Chain in Northern Illinois. Photo courtesy of Classic Boating.
